The City of Alamosa is a Home Rule Municipality in Alamosa County, Colorado, United States. It is also the county seat. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 8,682. The city is the commercial center of the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado.

Alamosa was established in May, 1878 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and quickly became an important rail center. Alamosa, which means "cottonwood" in Spanish, is now a notable tourist town with many nearby attractions including the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. The town hosts a Sunshine Summerfest on the Rio; Festival which occurs the first weekend in June.

An outdoor enthusiasts' dream, Alamosa is surrounded by rugged mountain peaks and numerous recreation opportunities. A new excursion train runs daily during the summer from Alamosa to La Veta. This route takes you through breathtaking country you can’t see from the highway. Home to Adams State College and Trinidad State Junior College, higher education opportunities and cultural events abound. With many hotels and restaurants the City of Alamosa is a wonderful place to stay.
