The goal of the Citizens’ Police Academy is not to prepare graduates to become police officers, but instead to instill in citizens a greater general knowledge of the many functions of the Alamosa Police Department. The program has been created for citizens who are interested in taking a more active role in improving the quality of life in our community. The classes meet on 10 consecutive Wednesdays, from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. in either a class room setting or the field to provide attendees with some insight into many aspects for police work. Police and civilian personnel will present lectures and demonstrations in order to give Citizen Police Academy participants an understanding of the Department’s mission, practices, and operations. Topics covered, but not limited to will include: a basic introduction to law enforcement and constitutional rights, animal control, municipal ordinances, criminal investigations, self defense, firearms and scenarios, law enforcement driving and traffic/RADAR operations.
